This month we have the monumental honour of having the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, on our cover. An invested teacher, a diligent MLA and a visionary leader… just a few of the phrases that describe the inspiration that is our Madam President. A trailblazer who understands the importance of preserving indigenous traditions and culture, she is also one to spearhead digital developments in the country. Our story traces her youth, her immense dedication to her work, and the struggles and triumphs she faced during her journey to Rashtrapati Bhavan. She graces Femina’s cover to mark the occasion of India’s 77th Independence Day.
Given Droupadiji’s devotion to inclusivity and her championing of women and youth, as she does all citizens, we wanted to put together a Big Story that touches upon what it means to truly be free today. We speak to women across the country who have broken free and found their own successes – financial security, agency, personal journeys – in the face of different measures of strife. We also had an eye out for our coming generations. Young people who are doing incredible things in a variety of fields – from sport to social work – who will take our India from strength to strength.
