In August 2018, severe floods struck the south Indian state of Kerala, due to unusually high rainfall during the monsoon season. It was the worst flooding in Kerala in nearly a century. In this article, Jyothi Mahalingam discusses the possible factors responsible for this grave natural disaster and cautions that, if unchecked, human-induced climate change would further lead to shifting forms of weather conditions globally resulting in heavy rains, extreme heatwaves, and cold conditions.
