make fun of that classmate. ‘Big eyes’, ‘double battery’,
‘bunny teeth’, and so on go the taunts. We just love to get
together and have a good laugh at someone.
Laughing is good. We should all laugh more. And yet, I’m not
sure how making a person feel left out and uncared for is
such a great idea anyway. It is just us feeling superior or
‘cool’ for the moment over something silly, isn’t it? Instead,
what if we went past our first knee-jerk reaction and learnt
to enjoy the differences among us? Learnt to take an interest
in finding out what makes the other person ‘different’? No
matter what kind of difference it may be—of skin colour, of
abilities, of special abilities, of languages and religions and
cultures, of looks and talents. You’d be surprised at how
much your view of the world changes and grows when you
look at it from a ‘different’ angle.
Am I wrong in believing everyone is afraid of ‘differences’?
I would sure like to know. In fact, I would love it if you
could give me examples and stories to prove me wrong,
that tell me my assumptions are false. Write to me at
