I dette nummeret
For years, we humans have looked for ‘friends’ from other planets. The thought that the Earth is the only living planet in this vast universe is not only boggling, but scary. Therefore perhaps, as early as the Mayan and Egyptian Civilizations, human beings have held the belief that we are not alone. Researchers point to artefacts such as the Nazca Skull or certain Egyptian hieroglyphs that speak of alien beings and advanced technology. But these are all theories at best, and scientific proof is hard to find. Even so, the belief in the existence of life forms from another planet continues to fascinate and intrigue us. Every other day witnesses claim to have seen ‘saucer shaped’ UFOs flying in the sky, and believe that aliens live on Earth. Some believe that mankind’s greatest ideas, including the wheel, were actually planted in our brain by a superior life form from another planet. Others say that the human race itself was sent to Earth by an alien force----which explains the ‘missing link’ between the ape and human species. Oftentimes, the aliens described in these musings are friendly beings who are simply exploring the planet, and at other times they are shown as a destructive race bent on taking over the Earth. Several novels and movies on the subject, including ‘War of the Worlds’ and ‘E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial’, have enjoyed massive success around the world and fueled many imaginations. Is there someone out there just like us? Or is life on Earth incidental, and we are truly alone in this universe, after all? These questions will remain. But in the meantime, we can be happy that there is so much yet to discover… and who knows what tomorrow might bring us? Keep discovering! – Shriya
