No more fall yard work pain!
Woman's World
|September 16, 2024
Planting bulbs or raking leaves “involves repetitive bending and lifting, which can activate muscles that may not be engaged regularly,” says Alice Chen, M.D. But you don’t have to give up your hobby! Here’s how to block discomfort
Natural health solutions
Knee pain?
Bend this way
Small postural changes make a big difference in preventing knee pain. Dr. Chen recommends doing a shallow squat rather than a deep one to get closer to the ground. Bending your knees less than 90 degrees reduces the load on your joints. “This transmits the force [of your movements] to the muscles instead of the joints.”
Back pain?
Keep a neutral neck
Yard work often involves looking down with your neck bent forward. Being in this position for extended periods stresses your muscles, bones and intervertebral discs. To prevent problems, Dr. Chen recommends keeping your neck in a neutral position so it doesn’t jut forward. Positioning your head directly above your shoulders can prevent your muscles and ligaments from working too hard. Also smart: sitting on a gardening stool to stay eye level.

The Mary Tyler Moore SHOW
From That Girl in the 1960s to Ally McBeal in the 1990s to Sex and the City in the 2000s, television has long reflected the shifting image of independent women. Yet the true game-changer came in 1970, when The Mary Tyler Moore Show introduced Mary Richards—30, single, stylish and making her way in a newsroom full of men. Rather than being someone’s wife or daughter, she was the star, and she changed television forever. Join us for a look back at rare behind-the-scenes photos of the groundbreaking show as we celebrate its 55th anniversary.

Happy money, happy holidays
The holidays are here (yay!), and with them comes both joy and, let's be honest, stress. For many of us, the shopping lists, entertaining costs or the ache of an empty chair at the table can dim the sparkle of the season. If that's you, please accept my wishes that the days land lightly.
