Shetland SUPER SHEPHERD

What started off as a hobby became a lifelong passion for Kate Sharp
When she began breeding Shetland sheep almost 40 years ago, Kate Sharp never dreamt that she'd go on to produce more than 100 registered champions, become a judge and start her own knitwear business using their wool.
This year, Kate's Ewingston flock achieved something never done by the breed before when it was crowned supreme champion for the fourth consecutive year at the Royal Highland Show. It also marked her eighth win in total there.
It's the friendly atmosphere and the chance to reconnect with fellow breeders she hasn't seen since the previous year that draws Kate to shows, but her biggest passion is championing the breed and inspiring more people to get involved.
'I like sharing my knowledge. It's nice to encourage other people and give them a few tips if they want to get into showing Shetlands themselves,' says Kate, 62, who lives in East Lothian, with her husband Robin, 63, and her 65-strong flock. 'I like to help other people improve their flock and I like seeing younger people do well at the shows.'
Kate devotes many hours each week to tending her beloved Shetlands. Rather than work them with a dog, she says she 'works them with kindness', believing her approach produces happier and healthier animals. Kate's sheep live outdoors, only coming inside to lamb, and are raised in a chemical-free environment, as naturally and ethically as possible. She prepares them for shows by walking and halter-training them, and encourages them to eat and drink more, so they don't dehydrate come show day.
