LET COUNSELLOR KEREN LIGHTEN YOUR LOAD

I want to go out, but I'm worried I'll catch something
Q I know there are fewer bugs around in summer, but as an older person, I am still concerned when I'm in a room full of people that I might catch something. Surely, if you're ill, you should stay at home. I went to a talk the other day and no one wore a mask. They all coughed and spluttered. I don't want to just sit at home but I'm wondering if that's the only way to stay safe.Jane, Cheltenham
A I agree with you: if someone has an infectious illness, they should stay home during that period. I think more people are doing this since Covid. However, as we know, many viruses linger and the person may still cough but no longer be infectious. Some people have chronic conditions that mean they cough but there is no infection. The only thing we can do is look after ourselves. Masks are known to prevent the spread of infection. You could ask your doctor about this, as they may be able to help you to purchase one that is fitted to your face, which will be more effective. Staying home, as you say, is not a good idea.
