Threads Of Gold

Friendship is the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person, having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words.- George Eliot

I vividly remember the day I dropped my son at playschool. It was his first day, and his eyes were moist as he held my hand tightly. I felt like taking him back home, but just then, a small girl with two ponytails came like a fairy and said, "Let's go together." A glitter appeared in my son's eyes, and I smiled at the girl. She had given me solace then.

The scene at school was reenacted when our son left for a far-off place for higher studies. As we were about to return after dropping him, both his eyes and mine endeavoured hard to hold back the tears from rolling.

imageHis friends came along, and I watched them enter their classroom. I was reminded of the words of British writer C.S. Lewis: "Friendship is born at that moment when one person says to another, 'What! You too? I thought I was the only one.""" Since then, his friendships have evolved, and I have watched them strengthen. This December, they assembled in Chandigarh to celebrate a friend's wedding.
