The Canine Concern
Woman's Era
|June 2024
India faces a unique challenge with millions of roaming stray dogs.

The estimated population of stray dogs in India exceeds 60 million, making their numerical strength a significant nuisance. Stray dogs are responsible for rabies-related deaths. When bitten by a rabid dog, immediate medical treatment is crucial. Unfortunately, if treatment is delayed or unavailable, the outcome can be tragic. Shockingly, India accounts for more than one-third of the world's rabies fatalities, with approximately 18,000 to 20,000 people succumbing to rabid dog bites annually.
Non-rabid dog bites, both mild and severe, are also common in India. In 2021 and 2022, there were 17 lakh (1.7 million) and 27 lakh (2.7 million) reported dog bites, respectively. By 2023, this number had risen to 37 lakhs (3.7 million). The statistics clearly indicate an alarming increase in stray dog bites.
Sadly, the most vulnerable victims are often children and the elderly. While some dog bites are non-fatal, severe cases can lead to fatalities, especially among children. Another issue caused by stray dogs is road accidents. Although people generally drive carefully, highways often witness high-speed driving. Stray dogs suddenly dart across the road, forcing drivers to swerve to avoid hitting them. These sudden lane changes can result in accidents. Even abrupt braking by the driver may lead to collisions.
Prevention Of Cruelty
India also faces the unique challenge of having over 50.2 million roaming cows in its major cities and cow belt regions (including Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh). Alongside these cows, a staggering 60 million stray dogs roam the streets and roads of India. This large number of free-roaming animals is unparalleled in any other country in the world.
