Pioneering the Future of Cardiac Electrophysiology: The Trailblazing Journey of Dr. Vanita Arora
Woman's Era
|March 2025
For centuries, the field of Cardiology has been and dominated by men. When it comes to highly specialised fields like cardiac electrophysiology, their representation further dwindles significantly.

Despite their expertise and dedication, female physicians often face gender biases, lack of mentorship, and deeply ingrained societal expectations that make it difficult for them to rise to leadership roles. The journey of women in medicine is not just about academic excellence, it is a fight against invisible yet persistent obstacles.
Electrophysiology, a niche branch of cardiology that deals with heart rhythm disorders, is one of the most technologically advanced and rapidly evolving fields in medicine. It requires an intricate blend of precision, decision-making, and the ability to navigate state-of-the-art medical equipment. Yet, globally, women account for only a fraction of electrophysiologists. In India, the numbers are even more stark. Out of 330 members of the Indian Heart Rhythm Society, only four are women. These figures highlight the pressing need for greater representation and mentorship to encourage more women to venture into this demanding yet rewarding field. One such pioneer who has not only “dared” to enter but excelled in this space is Dr. Vanita Arora, the Clinical Lead for Cardiac Electrophysiology at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals. As the first female electrophysiologist in India, she has redefined the boundaries of what women can achieve in this field. Her story is one of perseverance, resilience, and groundbreaking achievements, making her a role model for aspiring female physicians across the country.
