The former Jetstar pilot's conviction has been quashed and he faces a retrial

Sitting in the public gallery of a Melbourne court on December 11, Emma Davies quietly sobbed. A panel of three appeal justices had just found that former Jetstar pilot Greg Lynn, 59, was no longer guilty of murdering her mother, Carol Clay.

Carol, 73, and her lover Russell Hill, 74, died while camping in Victorian High Country in March 2020, in what Lynn described as an accident.

Finding that there was a miscarriage of justice over the way the prosecution ran its case, the judges quashed Lynn's conviction and ordered a retrial.

Outside the court, Detective Sergeant Brett Florence, one of the lead investigators in the case, said the couple's families were “devastated”.

INITIAL SENTENCE

In a case that continues to grip the nation, Carol and Russell went missing from a Wonnangatta Valley campsite, a six-hour drive northeast of Melbourne, in March 2020.

Lynn, who was hunting and camping in the same spot, later told police the couple were accidentally killed during a confrontation with him, and in a panic he covered up their deaths.
