OUT OF THIS WORLD

As I jump out of our air-conditioned van into a rustic open-air Jeep, I instantly feel the desert heat. I'm on a tour to the San Andreas Fault with our lovely guide from Desert Adventures. I am told they have filmed scenes from Star Wars here, and as we wind our way through the rocky terrain I can definitely see the resemblance - it's like you'd imagine space to look like, or the edge of the world.

It's barren, it's dusty, but gosh it's beautiful. Our guide tells stories about the past - hunters would use parts of the palm trees and animals to make weapons, and the plants are still used to this day for medicinal purposes. Just as I think the heat is too much we come across an oasis. It seems too good to be true and let me tell you, it's not a mirage! There's flowing water, shade, and all manner of animals living under the dense foliage on the tree trunks.
