It’s almost impossible to believe Jenny Agutter has just turned 70. The actor has been part of our lives since she played teen Bobbie in The Railway Children in 1970, aged 17. In the last dozen years, she’s garnered worldwide fame again in Sunday-night staple Call the Midwife as the serene Sister Julienne.
When we meet today, Jenny is svelte and elegant in a pale grey dress, looking decades younger than her years. Warm and friendly, she explains that the idea of turning 70 is somewhat bewildering.
‘It makes me laugh because I don’t feel much different than I did,’ says Jenny. ‘I feel once you get into your 60s, what matters most is your health, what you’re doing and what you’re involved with. I have friends in their 80s and 90s who are doing fantastically, so that’s good.’
Jenny remains sanguine about developing wrinkles too. ‘Sometimes I look at myself in the mirror and go, “Yeah, you look all right for someone who’s 70,”’ she says with a laugh. ‘And other times I’m thinking, “Oh, my gosh, you look awful. But then of course you are 70.” So it’s like that. It’s often down to how much sleep I’ve had; it really does show.’ Jenny has aged gracefully,
