It was more a statement than a question. ‘Why do you never lose touch with your old friends?’ snapped my mother crossly. ‘We hardly see you these days!’ Aged 30, I was busy wrapping yet another wedding present, unearthing my well-worn hat and preparing to drive to yet another picturesque country church. As in Four Weddings and a Funeral, (just without the funerals, thankfully) my summer was punctuated with nuptials. It was the mid 80s and this was my 12th wedding of the year, and I was already proud godmother to three adorable babies, with more imminent.
