If you are brunette

Who knew there were so many different shades of brown? It's a real spectrum, from intense espresso right through to light ash, passing chocolate and mocha in between. Most natural brown hair has warm, orangey undertones, which means that when it is lightened with bleach or by the sun, it will start to take on a reddish tinge. This can give you a rich, expensive-looking brunette like Anne Hathaway that can be maintained or enhanced with a tinted conditioning gloss. Chocolate is a really flattering colour, especially if you have a paler complexion, as it will help to make your skin look less sallow and more radiant. But, if, like many brunettes, you're keen to keep the red at bay, follow Keira Knightley's lead and use a mask to create a cool, ash brunette for a modern finish.

For a warm brunette, try Glaze Supergloss Color Conditioning Gloss in Chocolate Gleam, £15.99, Superdrug.

For a cool brunette, try Wella Color Fresh Mask in Cool Espresso, £16.70, lookfantastic.com.
