10 TRICKS TO BEAT TRAVEL SICKNESS

Struck down by motion sickness whenever you're in a car, boat, train or even plane? 'Travel sickness is often a response to sensory mismatch – when your inner ear senses movement but your eyes or body don't register it in the same way,' says Soulla Demetriou, founder of soulshinewithsoulla.com. 'This disconnect confuses the brain, triggering nausea, dizziness and fatigue.' The good news is that there are science-backed tricks that can stop it in its tracks. Here's what you need to know.

1 BLOCK A NOSTRIL

Breathing in deep, steady breaths calms the nervous system and can help alleviate feelings of nausea and dizziness. 'Alternate nostril breathing is an extremely effective practice that involves breathing in through one nostril, closing it, and then breathing out through the opposite nostril,' says yoga teacher Hayley Court at forestretreats.co.uk.

2 SUCK ON A LIME

'As an ex-driving instructor I know a few things about travel sickness and my go-to is sucking on half a lime,' says travel expert Jo O'Connell (joandjo.notjusttravel.com). 'Even on boat trips with waves so big I'd have to crawl on my hands and knees, the relief from the lime was instantaneous.' It's thought that a lime's acidity helps settle stomach acid while its strong taste can distract from nausea.
