TRUMP ADMINISTRATION PLANS MAJOR AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL OVERHAUL

The Trump administration, led by Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, unveiled a plan this week to overhaul the U.S. air traffic control system, addressing aging infrastructure, staffing shortages, and outdated technology that have contributed to recent aviation incidents.

TRUMP ADMINISTRATION PLANS MAJOR AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL OVERHAUL

The proposal, requiring tens of billions in funding, aims to modernize the system to prevent crashes like the January 2025 midair collision near Washington, D.C., which killed 67 people.

For air travelers, airline operators, and policymakers, the initiative seeks to restore confidence in a strained aviation network facing growing safety concerns.

Duffy, joined by CEOs of the five largest U.S. airlines and families of crash victims, outlined the need for new telecom systems, radars, and infrastructure, alongside hiring thousands of air traffic controllers.

The plan, presented to Congress for funding approval, faces skepticism due to its high cost and the administration’s simultaneous push for federal spending cuts through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), currently operating with 17 critical systems flagged as outdated, has struggled with modernization, prompting urgent calls for reform amid a series of near-misses and crashes in 2025.

A midair collision on January 29, 2025, between an American Airlines jet and an Army Black Hawk helicopter over the Potomac River near Reagan National Airport killed all 67 aboard, marking the deadliest U.S. plane crash since November 2001.

The National Transportation Safety Board noted the helicopter lacked an Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) system, which provides precise location data, contributing to the incident.

Two other crashes followed: a medical transport plane in Philadelphia on January 31 and a commuter plane in western Alaska on February 6, killing 10, with investigators citing overloading in icy conditions.
