STARBUCKS TAPS CHATGPT TO SELL MORE COFFEE
Techlife News

Starbucks is using ChatGPT as a new storefront for inspiration, hoping artificial intelligence can help turn vague cravings into actual drink orders.
-
The company has launched a beta Starbucks app inside ChatGPT that lets people describe a mood, a flavor preference, or even upload a photo to get beverage recommendations, then customize the drink before finishing checkout in Starbucks’ own digital channels. Starbucks says the feature is meant to meet customers in their “moment of inspiration,” rather than waiting for them to open a menu already knowing what they want.
The move is not just a novelty. It is part of Starbucks’ broader “Back to Starbucks” turnaround strategy, which is aimed at reversing traffic declines and rebuilding customer momentum after a weaker stretch for the chain. The company has said that the recovery is beginning to show results, including its first U.S. comparable transaction growth in the fiscal first quarter that ended December 28. In that context, the ChatGPT beta is less about experimentation for its own sake and more about finding new digital routes to younger, highly customized beverage buyers.
HOW THE CHATGPT STARBUCKS APP WORKSThe setup is relatively simple. Customers can enable the Starbucks app through ChatGPT’s app directory, then prompt it using “@Starbucks” to begin the experience. From there, they can type requests such as wanting something bright in the morning, something less sweet in the afternoon, or something that fits a certain mood or style. They can also upload a photo that reflects their vibe, outfit, weather, or setting, and the tool will respond with suggested Starbucks drinks that match the prompt. Starbucks says users can then customize those recommendations and select a location. The final purchase, however, does not happen inside ChatGPT. Checkout is redirected to the Starbucks app or website.
