SAM ALTMAN AND JONY IVE'S AI-POWERED DEVICE AIMS TO REDEFINE TECHNOLOGY
Techlife News
|Techlife News #708
OpenAl, led by CEO Sam Altman, made waves earlier this week by announcing its $6.5 billion acquisition of io, an AI hardware startup cofounded by former Apple design chief Jony Ive, signaling a bold venture to create a groundbreaking "Al-powered computer."
-
Described by Altman as OpenAl's "magnum opus," the device―still shrouded in secrecy-promises to revolutionize how users interact with Al, moving beyond the limitations of smartphones and laptops.
For tech enthusiasts, investors, and industry observers, this collaboration between Altman's AI expertise and Ive's iconic design legacy sparks intrigue about its potential to reshape the $2 trillion AI market.
The project, under development for over a year by io's team of 55 engineers and designers, including ex-Apple veterans, is set to launch by late 2026, with plans to ship 100 million units.
CLUE 1: A SCREENLESS, NON-WEARABLE FORM FACTOR The first clue about the io device lies in what it is not-it's neither a smartphone nor a wearable like smart glasses or a pin. Altman explicitly ruled out these form factors in a staff meeting, while Ive expressed skepticism about wearables, criticizing products like the Humane AI Pin and Rabbit R1 as "very poor" for lacking innovative thinking.
Instead, the device is described as a "third core device" that would sit alongside a MacBook Pro and iPhone on a desk, suggesting a compact, unobtrusive form factor, possibly pocket-sized or desk-resting, capable of blending into daily life.
This vision aligns with Altman's critique of current AI interfaces, which require clunky steps like opening a laptop or app to access ChatGPT.
The io device, likely screenless to "wean users from screens," may rely on voice, audio, or other novel inputs, drawing inspiration from sci-fi concepts like the AI companion in Spike Jonze's Her.
