OPENAI HALTS JONY IVE PROMOS AMID TRADEMARK BATTLE

A federal judge has ordered OpenAl to stop marketing its partnership with Jony Ive's Al hardware startup, io Products, due to a trademark dispute with another Al company, iyO.

OPENAI HALTS JONY IVE PROMOS AMID TRADEMARK BATTLE

The ruling, issued by U.S. District Judge Trina Thompson, bars OpenAI, CEO Sam Altman, and Ive from using the “io” name or any similar mark until a hearing resolves the issue. The decision came after iyO, a startup developing Al-powered earbuds, sued for trademark infringement, claiming the “io” name could confuse consumers.

OpenAI quickly removed all mentions of the io partnership from its website, including a splashy announcement page and a promotional video featuring Altman and Ive. In place of the page, the company posted a message stating the content was down due to the court order but maintained it disagrees with iyO's complaint and is exploring its options. The move erased traces of a $6.5 billion deal meant to merge Ive's design expertise with OpenAI's AI prowess, raising questions about the venture's branding future.

imageiyO's CEO, Jason Rugolo, hailed the ruling, vowing to protect his company's brand against what he called an overreach by high-profile figures like Altman and Ive. The lawsuit argues that iyO, which emerged from Google's X moonshot factory, has prior claim to its name, having pitched its AI hardware to Altman's investment firm and Ive's design company years earlier. The judge found iyO's case strong enough to warrant a temporary halt, citing potential consumer confusion between the two brands.
