CHINA APPROVES WORLD'S FIRST COMMERCIAL BRAIN IMPLANT

China has approved what officials describe as the world's first commercial invasive braincomputer interface, moving a coin-sized brain implant into the market before competitors such as Elon Musk's Neuralink.

CHINA APPROVES WORLD'S FIRST COMMERCIAL BRAIN IMPLANT

The device, known as NEO, is designed to help people with paralysis regain limited hand movement through signals translated from the brain to an external robotic glove.

The approval from China's National Medical Products Administration gives Shanghai-based Neuracle Technology and Tsinghua University a lead in one of the most closely watched areas of medical technology. While U.S. companies including Neuralink, Synchron, and Paradromics remain in human trials, China's clearance marks a move from experimental research toward controlled commercial use.

A LESS INVASIVE PATH INTO BRAINCOMPUTER INTERFACES

NEO differs from Neuralink's approach in one major way: placement. Instead of inserting electrodes directly into the cerebral cortex, the Chinese device uses an epidural design, with sensors resting on top of the brain's protective membrane.

That structure is intended to reduce surgical risk while still capturing enough neural activity to interpret movement intention. The tradeoff is precision. Devices that penetrate brain tissue may capture higher-resolution signals, but they also involve greater risk. NEO appears to prioritize safety and practical function over maximum signal detail.

imageThe implant is approved for adults ages 18 to 60 with quadriplegia caused by cervical spinal cord injuries. The initial commercial use remains narrow, focused on a specific group of patients rather than a broad consumer or enhancement market.

FROM BRAIN SIGNALS TO HAND MOVEMENT

The system works by detecting neural intentions related to movement and translating those signals into commands for a robotic glove.

The goal is to help users perform basic daily actions, including grasping objects, drinking water, or writing.
