Apple is quietly testing a ChatGPT-style app designed to give iPhone and iPad users a conversational Al experience integrated directly into its ecosystem, according to reports from people familiar with the project.

APPLE TESTING CHATGPT-LIKE APP AS AI PUSH ACCELERATES

The move marks one of Apple's boldest steps yet into generative Al, signaling that the company intends to compete more directly with OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic in the rapidly evolving market for consumer-facing Al assistants.

AN APP BUILT FOR APPLE'S ECOSYSTEM

The app, reportedly in internal testing under the codename “Apple GPT,” is designed to let users interact with an Al model through natural conversation. Unlike Siri, which is limited to task-based commands and system controls, the new app would be able to draft emails, summarize documents, generate text, and even help brainstorm ideas—similar to what users have come to expect from ChatGPT.

Sources say Apple is focusing on tight integration with iOS and iPadOS, giving the app advantages over third-party competitors. Users could pull in context from Notes, Mail, or Calendar with permissions, making the Al not just a chatbot but a personalized productivity assistant. Apple is also reportedly testing features that allow the Al to hand off tasks to apps across the system, deepening its utility beyond simple Q&A.

One of Apple's biggest differentiators could be its emphasis on privacy. The company has consistently marketed its products as secure alternatives to competitors, and insiders suggest the app will rely heavily on on-device processing for sensitive queries. For more compute-intensive requests, Apple is developing secure pathways through its cloud infrastructure, with encryption and minimal data retention as part of the design.
