Apple has announced a major leadership transition within its artificial intelligence organization, confirming that John Giannandrea, who has overseen the company's Al strategy since 2018, will step down next spring.

APPLE RESTRUCTURES ITS AI LEADERSHIP AS JOHN GIANNANDREA PREPARES TO RETIRE

The move marks the most visible shift inside Apple's Al group since the introduction of Apple Intelligence last year, a suite that was intended to position the company more firmly within the rapidly evolving Al landscape.

Giannandrea, who joined Apple after leading Al efforts at Google, has served as a senior vice president reporting directly to CEO Tim Cook. Apple said he will stay on as an advisor until his retirement. His departure arrives at a moment when Apple's Al strategy is under heightened scrutiny, as competitors invest in large-scale systems that rely heavily on cloud infrastructure and specialized data-center hardware.

Amar Subramanya, an Al researcher whose background includes Microsoft and Google's DeepMind division, will succeed Giannandrea. Subramanya will take on the title of vice president of Al and report to software chief Craig Federighi. His appointment reshapes the internal reporting structure of Apple's Al organization and reflects the company's ongoing efforts to recalibrate its leadership in the wake of Apple Intelligence's uneven reception.

The introduction of Apple Intelligence in 2024 represented a significant commitment by the company to demonstrate progress in generative AI. However, several components of the suite have faced delays, drawing attention to the pace of Apple's internal development. Among the most anticipated updates was a rebuilt version of Siri designed to offer greater contextual awareness and more natural interactions.

Apple postponed the feature to 2026, raising questions among analysts about the readiness of its underlying models.
