Your face may soon be your biggest worry
T3 India
|October 2025
Jon Bentley sounds a word of warning about surveillance cameras' facial recognition and how this could impinge on your life
I'm worried that cameras recording our faces will soon be even more burdensome than those recording our number plates.
Anything you do with your car these days makes you an easy target for anyone with access to the DVLA's database. In some cases it's hard to argue against this surveillance. Detecting transgressions such as grossly dangerous speeding, or driving without insurance, is surely in the public interest.
But there's mission creep - in both the private and public sectors. Private parking firms have long been criticised for imposing huge 'fines' for breaking minor parking 'rules' like not paying within five minutes of entering, or mis-keying your registration into a machine. Appeals are often ignored, and contesting any of these charges can result in a county court judgement against you.
