The latest gen saunters on rather than sprinting clear

The third generation of the Apple Watch Ultra takes the same formula as the two before and adds a few new ingredients. But as with the Ultra 2 a couple of years ago, it's not enough to make an upgrade worthwhile – from the old model, or even from a standard Apple Watch Series 9, 10 or 11.

The Ultra's got off-grid satellite connectivity now, plus 5G data. You won't need 5G for what this watch can do, but as mobile networks move more into the 5G era, there is an element of futureproofing. The display is slightly larger thanks to a smaller bezel, though this isn't transformative. The upgraded display is better for viewing angles from the side, though, and this is really handy.
