YOUTUBE EXPANDS PREMIUM LITE WITH OFFLINE DOWNLOADS AND BACKGROUND PLAYBACK

YouTube is giving its lower-cost subscription tier a meaningful upgrade.

The company confirmed that Premium Lite subscribers will now gain access to offline downloads and background playback — two features that were previously reserved for the full YouTube Premium plan.

The changes apply to the $7.99 per month Premium Lite tier and are rolling out globally over the coming weeks. The update follows months of feedback from pilot users who said the cheaper plan felt incomplete without the ability to download videos or continue playback when switching apps.

WHAT PREMIUM LITE NOW INCLUDES

With the update, most standard YouTube videos can now be downloaded for offline viewing under Premium Lite. Subscribers can also continue listening to videos while using other apps or when their phone screen is locked — a feature commonly referred to as background playback.

These additions significantly narrow the feature gap between Premium Lite and the full Premium subscription. For many users, background playback has long been one of the most practical reasons to pay for YouTube at all, especially for podcasts, interviews, long-form commentary, and educational content.
