TONY Mowbray cut a wistful figure as he peered back through the mists of time to his glorious three-year stint at West Brom.
Appointed in 2006, the team he crafted was renowned for its gung-ho attacking football and within two years had passed their way to a Championship title and FA Cup semi-final.
“We were winning every week, to be honest,” said the 59-year-old, who takes Sunderland to the Hawthorns today knowing that defeat to his old side would all but end the Black Cats’ slender hopes of securing a berth in the playoffs.
“We had Kevin Phillips scoring goals, hundreds of them. They were good days, full stadiums, winning derbies. My first game was the Black Country derby against Wolverhampton Wanderers. We won 3-0 and I don’t think we lost one in the whole time I was there. Great times.”
