FILLING THE TANK
I've decided I want to up my racing game next year and enter some multi-day events. I'm aware that I'll have to consume a lot of calories while I'm out, but also that there's loads of discussion about how best to do this. My pals constantly joke that I'm going to have rotten intestines after downing loads of energy drinks - is this true? Stan, via email
Having done a few such long events ourselves - fuelling both adequately and inadequately! we can confirm you're going to burn lots of calories. If you want to perform at your best, a mixture of carbohydrate sources is wise, and dedicated energy products should be part of that mix.
We find energy drinks the most efficient way of getting calories in, because bottles are quick to swig from (followed by gels, which are easier to swallow than dry or sticky energy bars). These drinks contain a mix of sugars (basically, sweet-tasting carbohydrate).
Sugar has a bad rep, but when it comes to sports nutrition, it really is key. It's quick and easy to consume, and readily digestible, so turns into leg power fast.
