5 BIG OPEN QUESTIONS
Golf Asia
|July 2022
From strategies and winning scores, to howling winds and epic comebacks, we ponder The Open's key questions ahead of the biggest party of the summer.
A PLACE IN HISTORY The Home of Golf brings the best out of the best. Champion golfers at St Andrew's include Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Peter Thomson, Seve Ballesteros, Bobby Jones, Sam Snead, and Sir Nick Faldo.
1 SO WHAT MAKES ST ANDREWS SO SPECIAL?
TIGER WOODS
"Playing at St Andrews is literally the best. It's like going back in time. To have won two Opens there, it's one of the greatest walks coming up 18, to see the whole town there. Every great player that has ever played the game has played St Andrews - you can't say that about any other golf course." RORY MCILROY "The amount of great players that have won there, the history of the place, the atmosphere, the feeling. There's just some sort of nostalgic feeling you get when you walk onto the first tee. It's the perfect venue to win an Open Championship. Honestly, I'd like to see The Open played at St Andrews every year if it could be. It's definitely my favourite Open venue by a long way."
PHIL MICKELSON
"If it were up to me, I would play The Open Championship there every year. As much as I love all the other golf courses, there's something so special about St Andrews. The other thing is that the driver is never taken out of your hands. You can hit driver on just about every hole, and there's plenty of room on a number of holes. I feel like it gives you a much bigger option off the tee, and it's a great second-shot golf course you always have a shot into the green, but sometimes it's such a difficult shot that you're still fighting for par or bogey from the fairway."
SIR NICK FALDO
