We test a wide selection to see which one best protects us from the elements
Is your trusty rain-repelling layer nearing the end of its useful life? Forking out for a new one is a financial commitment, so you'll want to get it right.
With climate experts predicting warmer, wetter winters, and heavier rain becoming more frequent (according to the Met Office, October 2023 to March 2024 was the wettest winter half-year on record for England and Wales in over 250 years), a decent jacket is a must.
Luckily, the design and technology that goes into keeping you dry is constantly improving, so you'll find plenty of options that can handle a downpour. The best ones aren't cheap, but you could consider buying a jacket that can keep you dry both on and off the bike, to help get your money's worth.
We headed out in the rain to test six candidates (which all come in men's and women's sizes) and help you work out your priorities when splashing the cash. From commuter-friendly to gravel-suitable via lightweight packable options, spanning a price range from £130 to £295, we've tried to give you an idea of what's out there and what to expect, both features- and performance-wise, this season.
How we tested
Each jacket was worn in autumnal rainy UK conditions in temperatures of around 10-16°C. The fit, technology and functionality were considered, with value for money also taken into account. Waterproofing and breathability coudn't be measured scientifically, but we give our impressions.
Need to know
DWR
Almost all waterproof jackets have a Durable Water Repellent treatment on the outside. This hydrophobic chemical coating (traditionally made from PFAS – synthetic chemicals not easily broken down in nature) causes water to bead up and run off. Over time, it wears off and needs to be reapplied.
