In an interview last year, Mumbai batter Suryakumar Yadav admitted he was extremely disappointed at not being picked in the white ball squad for the 2020-21 tour of Australia. Ahead of the squad selection, it was almost a given that Sky would make the squad. He had excelled in the domestic season and was among Mumbai Indians’ (MI) best batters during the IPL 2020 season. And so, when Suryakumar’s name was not part of the white ball squad for the series Down Under, along with a number of critics, the man himself was shocked. Finding the snub difficult to digest, he went alone to the beach for a walk. Cut to the present, Suryakumar has swiftly become a near-indispensable part of India’s white ball teams.
