Issue 62

From snappy shrimp to whooping damselfish, coral reefs are a cacophony of noise.

Sounds of the sea

Snap, crackle and pop. No, it isn't the sound S of your breakfast cereal but a healthy coral reef. Known as the "rainforests of the seas", coral reefs cover less than 1% of the ocean, yet are home to 25% of all marine life. This makes them important areas to protect, but it can be hard for scientists to get up close and see how they are doing. Now, thanks to the strange sounds of the sea, experts can listen in on them instead.
