FROM POWER TO PEACE

I WAS IN LISBON AT THE END OF MAY. The city—like the entire country of Portugal—was gearing up to celebrate the 51st anniversary of the Carnation Revolution.

FROM POWER TO PEACE

Locals call it by the date: vinte cinco de Abril (April 25). The revolution was a military coup by military officers who overthrew the repressive fascist Estado Novo government. It was named for the carnations that demonstrators placed in the muzzles of guns and on soldiers' uniforms when the population took to the streets to celebrate the end of the dictatorship.

Locals and tourists attended parades and ceremonies and walked through the streets with red carnations they bought from street vendors. The jubilant mood continued well into the night, with every bar and restaurant having a party and loud music overlapping into a celebratory cacophony. I wondered how the day differed from their Independence Day. When was their Independence Day? Wait ... did they even have an Independence Day? Who would they have gained independence from? They were the colonizers!

A quick search confirmed that, except for a brief period of 60 years (1580-1640) when Spain controlled it, Portugal has been a sovereign country since its founding in 1143. It would eventually become one of the earliest and longest-lasting colonial powers, extending its reach to South America (Brazil), Africa (Angola, Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, and São Tomé and Príncipe), and Asia (Goa, Macao, parts of India, and Southeast Asia). In 1526, in the name of profit, they created a horrifically dehumanizing practice that would subsequently change the very fabric of the Americas: the transatlantic slave trade.

A CHRISTMAS GIFT TO EARTH

OVER THE YEARS, my take on Christmas has shifted a lot. I was taught it was a celebration of the birth of Jesus, but really it was all about the presents!

A PATH FORWARD

IF YOU REMEMBER ONE THING from this column, remember this: Being out of harmony with your soul or with the demands of your spiritual nature is like having a rock in your shoe. It is going to bug you until you fix the situation. If you remember two things from this column, add this: Your soul is not about happiness. The rock in your shoe is not unhappiness. What our soul or spirit wants is to be fully present, innocent, and vulnerable to the vibrancy of life—to show up fully to life, whatever it brings.

THE SMALL THINGS WE CARRY

I CAN’T REMEMBER HOW LONG I have been carrying protein bars or other snacks in my glove compartment. I do this so that when I come to a stoplight where a person is sitting with a cardboard sign in hand, sun in their eyes and shoes worn thin, I can easily pop open my glove box and offer what I have. It doesn't happen too often, yet it did the other day. I realized the position I was in and what I had stashed away. It's my chance to look someone in the eyes who likely is not used to having their humanity affirmed. For the length of a breath, we are just two people in the same world. Rarely are words exchanged, but the hands say enough. I know it's not a lot, and it is what I have.
