When good storage drives go bad

TERROR BYTES

Sometimes, storage drives stop working. It should be easy to accept that fact, for several reasons: firstly, what goes on inside those things is basically magic in the first place, and secondly, we’re well accustomed to every other component failing at some point so there’s no reason not to expect the same of our M.2s, SATA SSDs and vintage spinning hard drives. It just hurts so much more when they do. When a graphics card goes gentle into that good night, our activities are halted until we install a new one. It's expensive and painful, but at least there's our CPU's integrated graphics to tide us over and help us complete basic operations. When a storage drive goes, it's more like there's been a fire in your home. Your virtual possessions, things that you assigned value to and kept hold of, are now gone, possibly forever.
