INDIA'S AEROSPACE POWER IN A MULTIPOLAR WORLD
Geopolitics
|February 2025
India requires a comprehensive strategy that integrates policy reforms, increased investment, technology development, and human resource development to confront multifaceted challenges in the aerospace sector, writes JOSEPH P CHACKO
Aerospace power has become a critical determinant of national international strength and influence in the global context. The United States maintains its position as the preeminent aerospace power through its sophisticated space program and advanced air force capabilities. NASA and the Space Force, with their extensive satellite networks, cuttingedge stealth aircraft fleet, and pioneering space exploration initiatives, exemplify the United States' aerospace dominance. Their capabilities encompass a wide range of space-based surveillance systems and sophisticated fighter aircraft, thereby establishing global standards in aerospace technology.
Russia continues to use its Soviet-era aerospace heritage to maintain substantial capabilities in both military aviation and space operations. Their advanced air defence systems and ongoing space launch capabilities are notably indicative of their aerospace strength. Despite economic challenges, the Russian aerospace sector has exhibited remarkable resilience by continuing to develop modern fighter aircraft and pioneer hypersonic weapons technology.
China has rapidly become a significant aerospace power, exhibiting remarkable development in both military and civilian aerospace capabilities. Their ambitious space programme, which includes successful lunar and Mars missions, demonstrates their increasing technological sophistication. The Chinese aerospace sector has made substantial progress in the development of indigenous stealth aircraft and the expansion of its satellite networks. Additionally, it has made significant investments in the incorporation of artificial intelligence and drone technology.
