6 EASY PORTRAIT COMPOSITION TIPS FOR STUNNING PHOTOS EVERY TIME

Capturing compelling portraits involves more than just pointing your camera at someone and clicking.

While many of us start our portrait journey focusing solely on getting our subjects to smile naturally, there's a whole world of compositional elements that can elevate your images from good to extraordinary. In this article, I'll share some tried-and-true composition techniques that I've developed over years of portrait photography.

If there's one golden rule in portrait photography, it's this: the eyes must be tack-sharp. In my experience, even the most beautifully composed portrait falls flat if the eyes lack that crucial sparkle of sharpness. The simplest way to nail this is by manually selecting your focus point and positioning it between your subject's eyes - think of it as placing a bullseye right there. This technique will make sure the eyes are sharp.
You'll also want to position the subject's eyes strategically in your frame. Unless you're shooting a full-body portrait with your subject in the lower third, try placing the eyes in the upper third of your composition. I've found this creates the most natural viewing experience, as it's exactly where viewers instinctively look to connect with your subject.
