REMEMBERING GIRISH MISTRY

January 2024

Note from the Editor - There aren't too many people who you meet in life that leave an impact in your memory. So when I learnt about the unfortunate passing of Girish bhai in May, I really wanted to do something. But I didn't want to something in one of our regular issues. It just didn't seem befitting, not only because of all the efforts that he had put towards the industry, but also the kind of a person he was. Hence I decided that our 36th Anniversary issue would be the perfect platform to celebrate him and his work.

REMEMBERING GIRISH MISTRY

While I was thinking over the months about how can we pay tribute to a person who has had an important hand in shaping the photography education industry in India, I felt what would be better than asking his wife, Hridgandha Mistry to share her thoughts in her words about him. I remember Girish bhai as an individual who was always very warm, keen to discuss industry trends and also a very lively person. Undoubtedly, the industry, its people will surely miss him.

Girish Mistry, born on 5th September 1960, was a trailblazer in the field of photography for nearly four decades. Undoubtedly his contributions to the world of photography has solidified his status as a veteran photographer and photo educator in the industry. What’s interesting is that his birthday also aligns on the same day as ‘Teachers’ Day’ in India, adding a unique layer of significance to his role as a mentor and educator in the realm of professional photography.

The Rise of Street Couture Photography

Street couture photography has taken over fashion culture in a way few trends have before. It blends high fashion with real world grit, turning sidewalks into runways and everyday people into style subjects. This shift did not happen overnight. It grew from a mix of social media influence, shifting brand priorities, and a global appetite for authenticity. What used to be a niche style is now a major force shaping how fashion is captured, consumed, and imagined.
