Treasury risks 'undermining' homeownership ambitions

The Treasury risks “undermining its own ambitions to promote homeownership” without more clarity on the future of cash Isas, the Conservatives have warned.

Mark Garnier called on the Government to offer savers “certainty” about cash Isas.

Treasury minister Emma Reynolds told MPs that the Government would like to “make sure that more people have the opportunity and confidence to invest” by reforming the tax-free savings regime.

Their exchange followed an announcement by Chancellor Rachel Reeves in her Mansion House speech that long-term asset funds will be allowed to be held in stocks and shares Isas next year.

The Government will also “continue to consider further changes to Isas, engaging widely in the coming months”, Ms Reeves said.
