Wotton takes the positives despite heavy loss for Torquay

TORQUAY United manager Paul Wotton will have learned an awful lot from Wednesday night's preseason friendly against Plymouth Argyle after the Gulls were beaten 6-0 by a strong Pilgrims side.

Argyle were just as strong in the stands as they were on the pitch, with many of their fans infiltrating Bristow’s Bench to add to the 1,546 of the 5,244 attendance that were officially reported as having bought away tickets.

Argyle, who are in League One this season after being relegated from the Championship, have a new manager in Tom Cleverley, and his assistant is former Torquay midfielder Damon Lathrope. They look to have the Pilgrims sharp and ready for their first league game on August 2.

Torquay, meanwhile, have a further week of preseason than that - and will be working towards the home game against Enfield Town on Saturday, August 9. They are at home against a young Exeter City team on Friday night, before they go to Weymouth, now a Southern League team, on Saturday, August 2.

"I thought in the first half we were very, very good," said Wotton. "The first 15-20 minutes I thought we were excellent - and we were a little bit unfortunate to go in 1-0 down.
