City suffered a painful defeat against Cardiff City as they were swept to a comprehensive victory at St James Park. The Bluebirds eased to a 4-0 win as they boosted their hopes of promotion and moved the Grecians closer towards the relegation zone. The goals had been coming before Rubin Colwill smashed home from a narrow angle after being left in plenty of space on the half hour. The captain doubled the lead moments later when he was unmarked to head in from close range.
Alex Robertson made it three midway through the second half when he had so much time and space to pick his spot and curl into the top corner from 25 yards. Callum Robinson off the bench made it four late on when he tapped in from close range. The Grecians never looked like getting anything as they slipped to defeat, doing so with a whimper having not even had a shot on target until stoppage time.
Defeat condemned Exeter to their longest run without a win in all competitions since they went 12 without victory between November 2000 and January 2001, as they are now 11 without a win. They drop down to 18th in the table, but are still four clear of the bottom four.
“I thought the start was OK. We were competitive and played a certain type of game to start off with and then, all of a sudden, it seemed to quickly go away from us,” boss Matt Taylor said.
