Gritters out for more SW wintry showers

THE South West is set for more freezing conditions, with showers of snow, sleet and hail sweeping in across parts of Cornwall and West Devon.

Gritters were sent out yesterday across the region and were due out again early this morning on some roads.

The Met Office had previously issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice in Devon until noon yesterday, with a second one issued from midnight until 11am today.

Snow made conditions difficult yesterday on the A386 at Lydford and the A3079 in Okehampton. Crashes affected traffic on other roads in the South West, including the A30 in Cornwall and the A303 in Wiltshire.

The Met Office yesterday warned: "Scattered sleet and snow showers will continue to feed southwards through Monday afternoon and evening, particularly near western coasts but occasionally spreading farther inland."

Whilst not all areas will be affected, some small snow accumulations will be possible, it added. Hail is also possible in some showers, which may lead to locally slippery conditions.
