A WOMAN who was quoted £1,300 for repairs to her roof has been fleeced out of a total of £25,000.

- ABIGAIL NICHOLSON

Jane, 75, which is not her real name, is among many victims that have been pressurised into having work done on their homes by what Cornwall Council is dubbing “roof gangs”.

After initially agreeing to £1,300 worth of work, she ended up paying £25,000 after the roofers came into a number of “issues” and “problems”. She also now has to find another £15,000 to put the roof right.

Jane said: “Initially they came to do £1,3000 worth of work and then that jumped because of this issue over what he said was rotten tiles. I don’t think they were. Then it jumped to £16,000 and it jumped again when he told me the rafters were rotten and would need to be replaced. It jumped to £25,000.”

Jane, who asked not to be identified, said she has struggled to sleep following her ordeal and wants to share her story to warn others.

She said: “They were talking in my face and were very loud and very pressurising. I don’t know what happened, I should have said ‘no, just go away.”

What exactly do we mean by a 'new year' anyway?

A HAPPY new year to all our readers, or a good many of them, at least; Cornwall's far from being the most culturally and ethnically diverse part of the UK but even here there's a good chance not all those who take this newspaper observe the Christian calendar, and more particularly that which was enforced on most of Europe by an edict of Pope Gregory the 13th in October 1582 (but not adopted in Great Britain until 1752).
