Western Mail Road safety needs a holistic approach

ROAD safety is always a key issue for many communities and the spotlight has once again been turned on a stretch of the A40 in Carmarthenshire.

Fresh calls are being made for the Welsh Government to take action over a 27-mile section of the trunk road between Carmarthen and Llandovery, which has seen more than 250 collisions in five years.

‘That figure has been branded deeply concerning, Sadly, road accidents and resulting deaths are not uncommon for those living on and around the road, which links Goodwick on the edge of Fishguard in Pembrokeshire and London.

In 2017 a 55-year-old woman died on the road as a result of a crash between a car and a skip lorry.

More recently, tragedy struck again on the A40. In October 2024 two people died in the same motorbike crash on the A40 near Llandovery.
