Starmer won't say if he'll resign if Labour lose Wales
Western Mail
|September 26, 2025
PRIME Minister Keir Starmer has refused to answer whether he will stand down if Labour loses Wales in the Senedd elections.
Polling ahead of May's election in Wales has shown Labour's vote share is projected at 14%, down from 40% in 2021, and that the party could slip to third place behind Plaid Cymru and Reform UK.
If the polls are right and Labour does not win in Wales, it would be the first electoral defeat in 26 years of devolved elections and end its long-running dominance in Wales.
The Prime Minister has been under pressure from within his party and some have said that the local elections in England and the devolved elections in Wales and Scotland will be a key test.
In an interview with ITV Cymru Wales’ Adrian Masters ahead of Labour's UK party conference this weekend, he was asked if he would stand down if Labour did not win.
