Restructure could lead to Wales stars heading across the bridge
Western Mail
|November 13, 2025
THE prolonged saga of restructuring the professional game in Wales looks set to push a host of players into the clutches of English clubs.
Last month the Welsh Rugby Union announced its intention to reduce the number of professional clubs from four to three which has caused a huge amount of uncertainty.
It wishes to do so by consensus ahead of the 2026/27 season but they may well have to put the three licences out to tender which would extend this whole saga.
We understand only two of Wales’ professional clubs are currently offering new contracts to players.
Technically a side cannot offer a contract unless there is a reasonable expectation they can meet that contractual expectation.
Previously, the WRU has said it will honour all current player contracts prior to May 20, 2025 for Welsh-qualified players and are understood to have given permission for the four sides to offer new contracts.
