Heat left rail tracks 'too hot to repair'

TRANSPORT for Wales (TfW) has revealed that sweltering heat last Friday, which caused a “track defect” at Abercynon, left the line so hot that repairs couldn’t be undertaken until temperatures cooled on Sunday night.

The problem caused chaos for thousands of fans trying to travel to and from the Stereophonics’ gigs at the Principality Stadium on the weekend.

Owing to the number of people TfW expected to travel by rail to the gigs, it decided to issue a “do not travel” alert for the Aberdare and Merthyr lines on Saturday, as temperatures hit 33°C.

In an update on its website, TfW explained that the air temperatures in the latest heatwave had sent track temperatures soaring.
