THE skills of Sean Bowen were hailed as he lit up the maiden Dragonbet Welsh Racing Festival at Chepstow over the weekend.

Bowen was crowned champion jockey for the first time last season and has been in red-hot form over the last few months, so is long odds-on for another title.

Chepstow’s meeting - made into three days from two — is when the jumps campaign starts in earnest and the rider was able to maintain his fine run with four winners.

Sticktotheplan got the ball rolling on Friday when he landed the Dragonbet Persian War Novices’ Hurdle in decisive fashion.

The jockey then struck on Ammes in a juvenile hurdle before guiding Rambo T to victory in the Wasdell Group Silver Trophy Handicap Hurdle, which was the feature race on Saturday.

Sticktotheplan and Rambo T are trained by Olly Murphy, who sang Bowen's praises.

“I'm lucky to have him - and he isn't going anywhere!” Murphy joked.

“He might be the go-to man that can win on a Saturday now but he will ride a lesser horse that needs pushing around Hereford for two and a half miles just as well.
