Fine-tuning a ‘revolutionary’ treatment for blood cancer

An innovative method of treating lymphoma can cause serious side-effects in some patients — but new research is making the procedure safer

NEW study has explored ways to improve treatment outcomes for patients with advanced blood cancer by enhancing their immune cells’ response.

Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cell therapy (CART) is an innovative new cancer therapy which harnesses the power of a patient's immune cells to create a specific, individualised therapy.

‘The revolutionary immune treatment is successful in around 50% of advanced lymphoma patients but can come with some serious side-effects. There is currently no way for doctors to predict which patients will be treated successfully.

More than 14,000 people are diagnosed with lymphoma each year in the UK, making it the most common blood cancer. Today is World Lymphoma Awareness Day.
