Dad-of-three fell to death while training for ultra marathon

THOMAS Alan Smith was training for an ultra marathon when he slipped from a mountain ridge.

His injuries were said to be unsurvivable after he fell 30m, followed by a tumbling fall of at least 150m.

Yesterday, a coroner found the 36-year-old died from multiple injuries due to a fall from height on August 16. She concluded the death was accidental.

Mr Smith, of Bolton, had previously been on Yr Wyddfa and other peaks including Cader Idris when he fell from Crib Goch, said Kate Robertson, senior coroner for northwest Wales.

His partner and mum to their three children, Shelly Price, said “fit and healthy” Mr Smith had been training for a 100-mile ultra marathon the following weekend. He had planned to go up Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) twice, she said in a statement.
