Could Ospreys fold into Cardiff? Do others buy them? How WRU might get to three clubs

After climbing down from what they stated was the optimal solution of reducing from four to two professional teams with significant central control, they have now settled on three teams.

The WRU wants to reduce to three teams by 2027 at the very latest with one based in the east, one in the capital city and one in the west.

So, what happens next and how do they get to three teams?

The WRU desperately wants to achieve its goal through consensus to avoid a tender process and a potential legal battle.

They are set to meet with all four existing clubs - Cardiff, Dragons, Ospreys and Scarlets - next week to begin the process.

Given the WRU’s stated desire for one team in the west, it has pitted the Ospreys and the Scarlets against each other, even if the governing body refuses to admit that.

The WRU own Cardiff Rugby after it entered administration in April and there are six parties interested in buying the club.

But what could solve a problem for the WRU is if the owners of an existing Welsh club bought Cardiff, because you cannot own two clubs.

This was referenced by WRU chair Richard Collier-Keywood in last week’s press conference it is understood there is a desire in some quarters to see Ospreys owners Y11 Sport & Media buy Cardiff.

If this scenario was to become a reality, the Ospreys would surely fold into Cardiff, giving the WRU the three-team model it desires, but this is a very long shot.

The Ospreys have partnered with Swansea City Council and have ambitious plans to redevelop St Helen’s, so it would be a surprise if Y11 weren't committed to ensuring that becomes a reality.
